The Houston in Action team cultivates our deep experience across diverse backgrounds and passions to strengthen the non-profit network in the Greater Houston Area. We use data to inform strategic advice to our team members, affiliated campaigns, and our network of partners. We are looking to expand our capacity and research efforts around what motivates people to vote and volunteer for a campaign, whether or not existing modeling accurately reflects our target communities, drilling down to effective tactics and messaging for our campaigns, and whether our campaigns are successful or not. We work in response to the needs of our partners, mission, and funders.

 

We are looking for a Senior Data Analyst who has strong technical skills and is also creative thinkers. We are looking for an individual who isn’t afraid of messy data (we are in the non-profit sector), and are passionate about helping non-profits develop non-partisan issue-based and electoral campaigns succeed. We need a confident subject matter expert who is comfortable in a production-orientated environment. 

This position is a full-time, permanent role. Houston in Action has a physical office located within the Museum District of Houston, Texas. and staff currently work remotely with responsibilities that include in-person meetings and events. We are open to the candidate being located outside of Texas, but must be willing to become familiar with Texas politics.

 

To thrive/succeed, you should have:        

● Proven track record in leveraging data-driven solutions to enhance social outcomes, with a preference for a multidisciplinary approach. ● Skilled at anticipating inquiries from internal teams and external partners while maintaining objectivity in analysis. 

● Demonstrated ability to extract insights from imperfect or incomplete data while recognizing and addressing potential data quality issues. 

● Ability to extend your expertise and guide data products from good to great! This may be done by reviewing work for quality, helping organize raw into noticeable patterns and enticing stories, guiding team members to recommendations, and providing helpful context. 

● Eagerness to excel in a fast-paced environment, possessing a proactive attitude toward tackling unique challenges and devising creative solutions. 

● Three (3) or more years working in a quantitative production environment or a postgraduate degree in a quantitative field. 

● Experience with and ability to apply knowledge of foundations of statistics and modeling (distributions, parameter estimation, confidence intervals and tests, etc.) both in your own work, and in the ability to guide others. 

● Experience with experimental design and causal inference. 

● Advanced understanding of a statistical programming language, preferably R. Expertise in predictive models using regression and machine learning techniques. 

● Ability to manipulate data with SQL (in a Redshift environment is a plus). 

● Proven experience creating analytics output (data products) within a production-oriented team. 

● Ability to effectively communicate and present technical concepts to a non-technical audience, via written communication, verbal communication, and visual representations. Create informative and engaging data visualizations using industry-leading tools such as Tableau. 

● Display leadership competencies in empathy, active listening, coaching/giving feedback, integrity, decisiveness, and problem-solving. ● Previous experience in a political campaign, nonprofit organization, or political consultancy is highly valued. 

● Familiarity with the current technology stack: AWS (S3), SQL, Redshift, Python, GitHub, and Google Looker Studio. 

● Knowledge of statistical programming languages, such as R, and experience with ShinyApps is preferred.

 

Your responsibilities as the Analyst/Scientist will include:        

● Lead the end-to-end development and deployment of data products and services using Python, Redshift, SQL, and other relevant programming languages. 

● Oversee the predictive modeling process from design to deployment, ensuring accuracy and efficiency. 

● Design and evaluate field experiments using experimental (RCTs), quasi-experimental, cross-sectional, longitudinal, and case study designs, and make recommendations based on the findings. 

● Mentor others on the team, leveraging your expertise to foster their professional growth. 

● Ensure data integrity and modeling outcomes meet quality standards, collaborating with the team to preprocess, aggregate, and analyze data as necessary. 

● Ensure the data and modeling results meet requirements for quality and work with the team to scrub, transform, aggregate, and report on data as needed. 

● Work with our Collective Learning team and our network of partners to troubleshoot problems and proactively create solutions. 

● Lead quantitative research efforts for our team and network of partners. Bring new research approaches to our attention. 

● Ensure team continuity by documenting processes and codifying knowledge.
