Director of Finance

Founded in 1978 by an educator and activist, they were an early leader in promoting childcare programs that are inclusive of all children, including those with special needs. With a $40M budget, the founding principles guide their work. They promote strengths-based education and best practices for child development by assisting vulnerable working families, supporting childcare providers and educational services, and advocating for economically resilient communities.

 

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), you will provide financial leadership for the agency by generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and internal policies and procedures. As the Director of Finance, you will lead all financial functions, including accounting, budgeting, overseeing contracts, and providing oversight of payroll. You must have a mission-driven approach to improve efficiency, minimize and manage risk, strengthen financial systems across all departments, and work closely with the VP Chief Financial Officer on short- and long-term objectives.

 

To be successful, you should have:

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, or related discipline; graduate degree in business or related discipline preferred. 
  • Successful track record of progressive responsibility in accounting and financial management, including managing an annual operating budget greater than $5M and supervising and managing financial staff.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including writing comprehensive reports and insightful presentations to the CFO and Leadership Team.
  • Experience in nonprofit accounting software preferred.
  • Experience managing contract and foundation funding, including cost allocations, audits, and reporting.
  • Proven ability to effectively prioritize, lead, coordinate, and implement projects and meet deadlines when faced with multiple demands.
  • Solid planning and organizational skills, including demonstrated ability to improve and upgrade internal systems and procedures. 
  • Commitment to supporting colleagues and maintaining effective productivity and high morale.

 

Your key responsibilities as the Director of Finance will include:

 

Organizational Leadership:

  • Lead a team of 4 finance and accounting professionals by providing management and mentorship that aligns with the agency’s core values. 
  • Participate as an active, open, and visible leadership team member, promoting effective collaboration across all departments and a positive work experience for all staff.
  • Prioritize efforts to operationalize the strategic plan through collaboration with the CFO and Leadership Team. 
  • Provide regular reports to the leadership team. 
  • Provide leadership on agency-wide initiatives, including regular assessments of future opportunities and challenges.  

 

Finance and Accounting:

  • Develop and maintain budget and financial forecasting, internal controls, and reporting strategies to ensure that fiscal management is accurate, precise, and timely; aligned with the organization’s overall strategy and mission; and complies with GAAP, government contract regulations, donor stipulations, and applicable laws.
  • Prepare, evaluate, and report on budgets for government contracts, including A/P and A/R. 
  • Prepare and interpret statistical and accounting information to assess operations and all programs against budget, cash flow projections, long-term sustainability, and the organization’s overall effectiveness. 
  • Work with the CFO to conduct regular financial reviews and be the primary contact with external auditors; resolve audit-related problems.
  • Provide timely reports to other departments, including grants, donations, and financial trends. 
  • Manage the payroll function, ensuring proper maintenance and audit of payroll records, payment of compensation, management of benefits accounting, and payment of taxes.
